Great Recipe

11 May

SO… Today is Mother’s Day and I decided to cook my mom one of my favorite recipes: White Chili by Ellie Krieger (food network) This recipe is SIMPLE, QUICK, CHEAP and HEALTHY so I thought I would share the link with all of you too!

White-Chili_med

Its great for any time of year no matter what the season or tempurature and its one of those meals that you typically have almost all of the ingredients for. I just had to run out and grab some white beans and hominy today. It goes great with some cornbread as well (I use Trader Joe’s Cornbread Mix – Delicious!) Click on this link for the recipe http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/ellie-krieger/white-chili-recipe/index.html

Are you interested in finding out:

How many calories you eat every day?

How to figure out the calories you SHOULD be eating to attain your goal weight?

How many calories you are burning everyday through activities and exercise?

What percentages of sodium, protein, etc you are taking in?

Then you have to check out The Daily Plate (partner of the LIVEstrong organization) I went to www.thedailyplate.com yesterday (top right hand corner) and registered. There are so many great tools on this site to learn about your health and the foods that you are eating including sections like My Food Diary, My Plate, and My Weight Goals and so on.  It is good for people who are trying to lose, gain, or maintain their weight! Personally, I am going to be keeping track of my food for the next month to figure out if I am getting the correct nourishment and a good amount of exercise! Join me today (my profile name is under caitlinmahnken/HumaNourish!) and create YOUR Daily Plate Profile for FREE! Take advantage of this well of info.

The Global Food Crisis

11 Mar

compassion

I have the luxury of going to bed every night with food in my stomach and waking up every morning to a hearty breakfast…but not everyone does. Can you imagine having to miss meals? Can you imagine going to bed with an ache in your stomach because you had not had any nutrients and sometimes no clean water all day long? I can’t. But many children all over the world, including here in the US, don’t have the option of going into the kitchen to grab a snack after school… or even to have dinner for that matter. Did you know that there are 25,000 starvation related deaths everyday? Did you know that 4.4 million children die of malnutrition each year? Those numbers are unreal. I think that one of our responsibilities in this life is to take care of innocent children who cannot help themselves. If we do not reach out to them, who will?

Compassions International has deemed today 3/11/09 Global Food Crisis Day and is raising money in order to feed children in need.

Global Food Initiative – Compassions International

“The global food crisis threatens the lives of millions and has been called a “silent tsunami,” unleashing turmoil against the most vulnerable children. The Secretary-General of the UN calls it a “moral outrage” and estimates that as much as            $40 billion a year is required for the next three to five years.

Compassion International exists as an advocate for children in poverty and works in some of the areas hardest hit by this crisis. We are providing solutions through local churches with nutritional provision and long-term strategies, such as agricultural education, training and tools, so that those consumed by this crisis have the opportunity to grow and prepare their own food.”

If this is something that weighs on your heart like it does mine, join with me and Compassions International to feed a hungry child. It only takes $13.00 to feed a child for an entire month! That is not a lot of money, but it does a world of good for a child. Go to http://www.compassion.com/global-food-crisis/?referer=98495&utm_campaign=gfcradio-klove-98495 and donate!!! There is not much to think about here. Take this opportunity to make a difference in this dying world.

Portion Plates!

Portion

With obesity jumping off of the charts portion control is needed now more than ever. We all tend to over eat and stuff ourselves until it’s uncomfortable but this is a contributor for easy weight gain. Some creative designers have come up with an easy way to avoid this problem! Portion control dining sets have recently hit the shelves and are all the rage. Take a look at the blog that I read http://blog.healthyeats.com/blog/2009/03/03/portion-plates-and-bowls/?nl=EATS_030409_20

This is SUCH a great idea and an easy way to control how many calories you are taking in and how much of each of the food groups you are and should be eating. I wish I had thought of this myself!
