Earth Hour 2009

This Saturday, March 28th between the hours of 8:30 and 9:30 pm everyone needs to turn off their lights! This is a world wide effort to “vote” against global warming. And while I am not completely convinced that every piece of information about the earth melting, I do agree that we humans are taking a HUGE toll on this earth that the Lord has so kindly blessed us with. And on a financial note, just think that is one hour of electricity you do not have to pay for!

From the Earth Hour official website – a little more info:

Earth Hour began in Sydney in 2007, when 2.2 million homes and businesses switched off their lights for one hour. In 2008 the message had grown into a global sustainability movement, with 50 million people switching off their lights. Global landmarks such as the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, Rome’s Colosseum, the Sydney Opera House and the Coca Cola billboard in Times Square all stood in darkness.

In 2009, Earth Hour is being taken to the next level, with the goal of 1 billion people switching off their lights as part of a global vote. Unlike any election in history, it is not about what country you’re from, but instead, what planet you’re from. VOTE EARTH is a global call to action for every individual, every business, and every community. A call to stand up and take control over the future of our planet. Over 74 countries and territories have pledged their support to VOTE EARTH during Earth Hour 2009, and this number is growing everyday.”

Join me and Millions of others THIS SATURDAY and turn out your lights and electrical products for ONE HOUR! Go to www.earthhour.org to learn more!

St Patrick’s Day!

Tomorrow is one of my favorite days of the whole year. Good food, great beer, fun games, and GREEN! This is, of course, my favorite color. This day is fun for all ages!

A few fun facts about St. Patrick’s Day:

- The Chicago River is dyed Green every St. Patrick’s Day! (They cut down from dumping 100 pounds of dye to 40 for a more environmentally friendly celebration)

- The Celts call the shamrock the “seamroy” – that’s fun – and it represents the rebirth of spring

- The Leprechaun is only a part of St. Patrick’s Day in the US!

And here is a fun toast for you to memorize and repeat when you are sharing a green beverage with friends tomorrow:

May your neighbors respect you,
  Troubles neglect you,
  the angels protect you,
  And Heaven accept you.”

Have a SAFE and HAPPY St. Patrick’s Day! And don’t forget to wear green – otherwise somebody will get TONS of enjoyment out of pinching you.

Thanks to www.history.com for the facts!

The Global Food Crisis

11 Mar

compassion

I have the luxury of going to bed every night with food in my stomach and waking up every morning to a hearty breakfast…but not everyone does. Can you imagine having to miss meals? Can you imagine going to bed with an ache in your stomach because you had not had any nutrients and sometimes no clean water all day long? I can’t. But many children all over the world, including here in the US, don’t have the option of going into the kitchen to grab a snack after school… or even to have dinner for that matter. Did you know that there are 25,000 starvation related deaths everyday? Did you know that 4.4 million children die of malnutrition each year? Those numbers are unreal. I think that one of our responsibilities in this life is to take care of innocent children who cannot help themselves. If we do not reach out to them, who will?

Compassions International has deemed today 3/11/09 Global Food Crisis Day and is raising money in order to feed children in need.

Global Food Initiative – Compassions International

“The global food crisis threatens the lives of millions and has been called a “silent tsunami,” unleashing turmoil against the most vulnerable children. The Secretary-General of the UN calls it a “moral outrage” and estimates that as much as            $40 billion a year is required for the next three to five years.

Compassion International exists as an advocate for children in poverty and works in some of the areas hardest hit by this crisis. We are providing solutions through local churches with nutritional provision and long-term strategies, such as agricultural education, training and tools, so that those consumed by this crisis have the opportunity to grow and prepare their own food.”

If this is something that weighs on your heart like it does mine, join with me and Compassions International to feed a hungry child. It only takes $13.00 to feed a child for an entire month! That is not a lot of money, but it does a world of good for a child. Go to http://www.compassion.com/global-food-crisis/?referer=98495&utm_campaign=gfcradio-klove-98495 and donate!!! There is not much to think about here. Take this opportunity to make a difference in this dying world.

Doggie Treats!

9 Mar

I am the proud owner of a cute, adorable, lovable, cuddly Jack Russell.

I am also a first time dog owner.

While there are so many joys in being a new “puppy parent” there is so much that I never knew and still have yet to find out. There are shots (which cost a fortune), food, chew toys, stuffed animals, walks, watering, feeding, getting up at 3 in the morning to let the little thing out because it has the bladder the size of a pea, come, sit, stay… and much much more. Now I had dogs growing up, but I was never the one to have to deal with any of these things. Now that I am the one caring for this tiny tot I know what my parents had to deal with every time my brother and I would whine our way into a dog, fish, cat, bird etc.

After two short months of owning my little one I have learned a valuable tip that might help you out too!

Dog treats, while they can lure and coax your dog into doing anything, are very fattening for a dog. And just like people, dogs can become overweight and unhealthy very quickly. Dogs can even become diabetic from being overweight! “They” say that one treat is like giving your dog an entire snickers bar! So I decided to experiment with vegetables. Now if your dog already gets human food he/she may not take a liking to this like my pup did. Rocky (that is her name) is on a strict DOG FOOD ONLY diet. I do not want her getting her little teeth on human morsels and then have to deal with her begging at the dinner table for the rest of her life because of that piece of steak I slipped her from my plate. But I decided that since dog treats are so fattening, and pricey, I would give her vegetables instead (of course she still gets a yummy dog treat every once in awhile but not on a regular basis) And let me tell you, she LOVES this. And I think that it’s simply because it’s not what she gets to eat every single day. Vegetables are a low calorie option for your dog! Rocky’s favorites so far are carrots and asparagus. Try this out and see if you can switch your pooch over to veggies as a replacement treat!
