Emergen-C vs. Airborne

26 Feb

Before my last trip home I decided that I was going to go and grab some Airborne and boost my immune system so as not to catch a cold during my visit and my flights. I started drinking a glass two days before I was to leave… but as I was sitting at my desk drinking it something tasted funny… I was trying to figure out what it was and after about an hour it came to me. Wait a minute! I know this taste! Its fake sugar! And sure enough I grabbed the bottle and read the ingredients. I was right.

I HATE fake sugar. I hate the taste it leaves in my mouth, I hate the links to cancer that it has (although the studies on fake sugars are “undetermined” I don’t want to take my chances), I just hate it. So, needless to say I poured out that glass and dumped the bottle. I did however check into the ingredients in Emergen-C, another supplement that I had used before as a daily vitamin option and it does not contain any fake sugars! Emergen-C does contain quite a bit of salt so if you are on a low sodium diet be sure to watch your intake on the days that you take Emergen-C. They also have come out with products for kids which is a great way to pump some vitamins into your little one. Here is the link to Emergen-C’s website www.emergenc.com . I think this is a great product and definitely the better, healthier option!

Valentine’s Day Candy

13 Feb

candy-hearts

Valentine’s Day is so much fun. Heart and flowers and kisses and hugs… and candy!!! I have a sweet tooth that doesn’t quit. So when the Valentine candy hits the shelves I am on it. But this year, as I was sitting at my desk chomping on a whole slew of Tootsie Rolls and Candy Hearts, I was thinking… hmmm… I wonder how many extra calories I am comsuming? I mean… it’s only 6 little tiny pieces of “mini” candy…right? WRONG! I did a little research and here is what I discovered:

Tootsie Rolls –

Calories: 12.5 a piece!

Sweethearts –

Calories: 110 for a small box!

Mini Snickers –

Calories: 45 for one itsy bitsy bar!

Hershey’s Kiss –

Calories: 25 for one kiss!

Kit Kat Mini –

Calories: 74 calories!

These candies are packed with useless calories! And I always seem to eat more of them because they are the “mini” version and OH what’s the big deal if I have a handful if Tootsie Rolls. Well… You have 4 kisses and that’s 100 calories! Two mini Snickers and that is 90! Not to mention the fact that these tasty little morsels are loaded with High Fructose Corn Syrup, Trans Fats, and tons of other overly processed items. So while it is ok to indulge in a piece or two, NOT 8 or 9, be careful about walking by that candy dish at the office too many times!

Thanks to www.thedailyplate.com for the calorie info!

Starbucks Anyone?

Starbucks Love

Some healthy choices from the “Evil Empire”:

Although I like to support my local small coffee shops in whatever town I happen to be in, every once in awhile I like to hit up a Starbucks Drive Thru. Let’s face it. They have good, strong coffee and some great snacks. And it beats going through a fast food line any day.

I took a little time to check out exactly what I was eating when I did that ever-so-random (cough, cough) pit stop to grab my medium coffee, and muffin, coffee cake, or oatmeal bowl on the go. Now the calories on some of these treats are quite high if you eat them as a breakfast choice, but if you swing through and have a cup of coffee, or tea and a muffin as your lunch, 400 calories is definitely a lower calorie choice than many of the options out there. As far as the quality of the ingredients goes I give it a B+. Almost all of the ingredients in these items are recognizable! And there are no “Trans” fats or fake sugars. What a pleasant surprise! I feel a little bit better about my guilty pleasure. Here are a few of my favorite choices and the list of “goods” inside:

Classic Coffee Cake – (420 calories)
BLEACHED ENRICHED FLOUR (WHEAT FLOUR, NIACIN, REDUCED IRON, THIAMINE MONONITRATE, RIBOFLAVIN, FOLIC ACID), SUGAR, SOUR CREAM (MILK, CREAM, MODIFIED
FOOD STARCH, LACTIC ACID, MONO- AND DIGLYCERIDES, SODIUM CASEINATE, SOY LECITHIN, SODIUM PHOSPHATE, GUAR GUM, CITRIC ACID, POTASSIUM SORBATE [A PRESERVATIVE], ACETIC ACID, XANTHAN GUM, LOCUST BEAN GUM), UNSALTED BUTTER (PASTEURIZED CREAM, ANNATTO), EGG, BROWN SUGAR (SUGAR, CANE SYRUPS), SALT, SPICE, BAKING POWDER (SODIUM ACID PYROPHOSPHATE, SODIUM BICARBONATE, CORN STARCH, MONOCALCIUM PHOSPHATE), NATURAL FLAVOR, BAKING SODA, ARTIFICIAL COLOR, CELLULOSE GUM.

Lowfat Triple Berry Muffin –  (310 calories)

WHOLE GRAIN CAKE MIX (WHOLE WHEAT FLOUR, SUGAR, FOOD STARCH-MODIFIED, SOYBEAN OIL, DRY WHEY, LEAVENING [SODIUM ACID PYROPHOSPHATE, BAKING SODA], VITAL WHEAT GLUTEN, SALT, MONO- AND DIGLYCERIDES, SORBITAN MONOSTEARATE, POLYSORBATE 60, HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP, WATER, NATURAL FLAVOR, CITRIC ACID), NONFAT YOGURT (CULTURED PASTEURIZED NONFAT MILK, PECTIN), WATER, EGG WHITES, BLACKBERRIES, ENRICHED UNBLEACHED FLOUR (WHEAT FLOUR, NIACIN, IRON, THIAMINE MONONITRATE, RIBOFLAVIN, FOLIC ACID), BLUEBERRIES, RASPBERRIES, ROLLED OATS, BROWN SUGAR, SOY OIL, ORANGE PEEL (ORANGE PEEL, SUGAR, ORANGE OIL), PURE VANILLA EXTRACT.

Perfect Oatmeal – (140 calories, add 50 with Brown Sugar)

WHOLE GRAIN ROLLED OATS (WITH OAT BRAN), SALT, GUAR GUM, CALCIUM CARBONATE, IRON, NIACINAMIDE, THIAMINE MONONITRATE (VITAMIN B1), CALCIUM PANTOTHENATE, PYRIDOXINE HYDROCHLORIDE (VITAMIN B6), FOLIC ACID.

For people who may be trying to lose weight I recommend grabbing a bowl of the Perfect Oatmeal for lunch. Not only is it satisfying but the calories are very minimal and it’s heart healthy as well.

Another good choice if you don’t want to spend 4-5 bucks on that iced latte, grab a Starbucks Frappuccino at the grocery store or gas station. $1.50 and you still get that Starbucks jolt you are looking for. This is also a great replacement for sodas! It has relatively the same calorie count and sugar content but does not have all of the processed sugars and chemicals in it.
